The Fact is that all coastal communities will have to adapt to sea level rise
Into the future.
No one knows for sure how high or how fast the sea will rise, Sea level rise is just a natural cycle of the planet we cannot stop it so we have to adapt to it.
Coastal communities have two options retreat or construct a sea wall capable of protecting the infrastructure we wish to preserve.
If we choose to retreat then how far is retreat acceptable considering that a predicted 1m SLR rise will destroy whole communities and cities.
If we choose to draw a line in the sand to protect chosen infrastructure then we must re consider our past practice of using a rock revetments because they are costly to construct, maintain and only have a 50 year life expectancy, but more concerning is that a series of category 3 cyclones along the East coast would or could destroy hundreds of km of this type of structure and the infrastructure that it was installed to protect.
We have to face the fact that in time it will not be possible to preserve some beaches in built up areas, our beaches will be in areas where natural retreat is possible.
